Why, oh why, would somebody steal the letter Y?

A San Carlos family is conducting a search one would typically see on “Sesame Street” — they’re looking for the letter Y.

Not just any Y, but their nearly four-foot tall white Y that brings joy to the family’s Park Avenue front yard.

For years the Rubingh family has decorated their front lawn with two angels and the word JOY during the Christmas season.

But early Sunday morning, around 1 a.m., it’s believed that a group of teens stole the Y, leaving the family’s decorations with two angels celebrating “JO.” Nicholas Rubingh said his neighbor’s doorbell camera caught some grainy footage of the thieves who committed this senseless crime.

“We want to spread joy during the holiday season, but now we can only spread jo,” said Rubingh, who posted on the neighborhood-based social media site Nextdoor about the family’s loss of joy.

Rubingh looked online for a new Y decoration, but the closet thing he could find was a 10-inch “W.”

Rubingh said his family has not filed a report with the sheriff’s office.

“I do not know Y you did this, but I know justice will prevail,” Rubingh wrote on his Nextdoor post.

Most of the commenters on Rubingh’s post also poke fun at the missing character — such as Dawn Crew, who applauds Rubingh for his sense of humor during this “trYing time!”

Others, such as John Bertine, suggested that the Rubinghs make a new Y.

  1. Followup, the family apparently enjoyed the celebrity of this event. They posted again just after Christmas that the Y was stolen again, and replaced with a crude “E” and asked for help finding “Joe”. After getting much sympathy and offers of help as well as continued condmenation of vandals, it was noticed that their photo of the “JOE” revealed the “stolen Y” leaning against the house. Not stolen. Hoax. Such holiday spirit – for what?
