Half-cent RTM transit bailout tax passing

Early results in the five counties. The numbers are expected to change as more votes are counted.

A new sales tax that would support money-losing mass transit districts such as BART, Muni and Caltrain appeared to be headed for defeat.

The tax would be collected in five Bay Area counties and the voters in those five counties were asked to approve the measure, known as RTM, yesterday.

Early results showed the tax was ahead 605,907 to 379,372.

If approved, a 0.5% sales tax will go into effect in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. In San Francisco, a 1% tax will be levied.

Supporters of Measure RTM said the tax is needed as BART, Muni, Caltrain, AC Transit and other agencies are facing looming deficits, as federal relief funding dating back to the Covid pandemic runs out.
