A Redwood City man who tried to keep a tractor he had rented is facing jail time — but it’s up to him as to how much he will face when he’s sentenced in two months, according to a prosecutor.
Juan Carlos Bravo Contreras, 35, had rented a bobcat tractor worth $50,000 from A1 Rentals on Tacoma Way in Redwood City on April 15, 2024, according to District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
After his month-long rental was up, Bravo Contreras told an employee at Al that he’d like to extend the rental.
The employee told Bravo Contreras that he needed to pay his outstanding balance, Wagstaffe said. Bravo Contreras did not reply to the employee, Wagstaffe said. The company called police, who were also unable to contact him, Wagstaffe said.
Eventually, someone spotted Bravo Contreras using the tractor on a project in San Jose, Wagstaffe said.
Yesterday, Bravo Contreras appeared in court and took a plea deal, pleading no contest to embezzlement for taking the machine, Wagstaffe said.
Judge Michael Dunleavy told Bravo Contreras he will receive either four or nine months in jail when he is sentenced on Sept. 24, depending on whether he repays A1 Rentals, Wagstaffe said.
