A mountain lion was found in a Redwood City backyard today (June 15), officials said.

A mountain lion is checked out by CA Dept. of Fish and Wildlife employees after being tranquilized in Redwood City on June 15. Fish and Wildlife photo.

Redwood City residents were warned to keep their pets inside at the 1800 block of Madison Avenue after police received multiple calls from residents of the Roosevelt neighborhood around 11 a.m. about a mountain lion wandering the area, California Department of Fish and Wildlife spokeswoman Krysten Kellum said.

The 1 to 2-year-old female mountain lion wandered into the neighborhood after leaving her nearby habitat, Kellum said.

The cat was tranquilized, and a GPS-tracking collar was placed on her to be moved back to an open-space habitat in the Santa Cruz Mountains around 12 p.m., according to Kellum.

“Mountain lions avoid populated areas and are very wary of humans, but will sometimes make their way into cities,” Kellum said. They typically return home on their own, but sometimes need help getting back, she said.
