Controversial Las Lomitas School District Superintendent Beth Polito “no longer has any responsibility” to the district, the board announced today (Jan. 21).

Board president Paige Winikoff announced at a special meeting today that Polito is no longer working for the school district that serves part of Atherton and Menlo Park.

The board then unanimously appointed Assistant Superintendent Valerie Park as interim superintendent.

It’s been a question as to whether Polito still works for the district since last Wednesday’s (Jan. 15) board meeting, when Winikoff announced that Park was interim superintendent effective immediately. The board today did not clear up what type of leave, if any, Polito is currently on.

At the Jan. 15 meeting, Winikoff also announced that Polito is formally retiring on Aug. 30 from the district.

Polito has been surrounded by controversy over the last few months. The school district’s first-ever strike in October led to parents digging through district finances and discovering receipts for stays at luxury hotels and expensive dinners.

The board revoked Polito’s district credit cards on Dec. 18 while the District Attorney’s office has been investigating her spending.

San Mateo County Office of Education is also investigating the district’s finances and has hired an expert in school district fiscal management to investigate credit card charges more thoroughly.
