Fire strikes apartment house; 2 suffer from smoke inhalation

Two people required treatment from medics after a fire broke out in an apartment building in the 100 block of Sierra Vista Avenue on Saturday.

At 12:48 p.m., 911 dispatchers received a call reporting smoke and flames coming from the first-floor apartment.

The resident of the unit was evacuated by a neighbor, according to the Mountain View Fire Department.

Meanwhile, firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, preventing the spread to neighboring apartments.

The occupant of the unit was examined for smoke inhalation but declined hospitalization, the fire department said. Same story with a neighbor.

The resident in the burned out unit got a $250 gift card from the California Professional Firefighters Union Supplying Aid to Victims of Emergency Program. The building management is coordinating with the American Red Cross to make temporary accommodations for the resident while the apartment is restored.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, however, early indications are that it may have been accidental in origin, the fire department said. The estimated damage to the contents and structure is $10,000.
