June 24, 1939 – December 22, 2023
Jim Maletis died peacefully on December 22, 2023 at the age of 84 with his family nearby. Jim will be remembered for his warmth, hard work, and deep commitment to family and friends.
Jim was born in Portland, Oregon on June 24, 1939, son of the late Peter and Vasiliki Maletis, who immigrated from Limnes and Corinth, Greece, respectively. Jim spent his childhood in Portland, attending Beaumont Middle School and Grant High School playing sports of all kinds. In 1961, he graduated from Oregon State University and was an active member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
Upon graduation, Jim moved to New York City to pursue a career in finance, quickly carving his path as a stockbroker. His sharp mind, calm demeanor, and knack for anticipating the market made him successful while starting his career at Dominick and Dominick. He soon moved to San Francisco, where he met his wife of 55 years, Mary Liz Hufnagel. Together they had 4 children and settled in Atherton, California.
While in San Francisco, he worked as a stockbroker at various companies before establishing a long career at Morgan Stanley. In 1999, Jim started Maletis Partners, a partnership, which he managed for 20 years.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Jim was known for his passion for sports and love of family. He was the quintessential “Dad Coach,” cheering on his children and coaching countless baseball, softball and soccer teams, and later in life watching his many grandchildren and their athletic endeavors. His golf game was constantly a work in progress, but something he enjoyed with friends and his sons through the years.
Whether he was playing golf, watching sports or the stock market, he approached life optimistically and with constant curiosity. His warmth, generosity, and humor endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He leaves a family bound by love and laughter, a testament to the man who valued his family above all else. He is survived by his wife, Mary Liz and four children, Peter (Amber) Maletis, Elizabeth (Courtney) Stuart, Laura (Nelson) Bolling, John (Francie) Maletis. Papoo leaves behind 12 beloved grandchildren: Isabella, Carey and Grant Maletis, Grace, Jack, Henry and Brooks Stuart, Olivia and Elle Bolling, and Morgan, Kelsey and Theo Maletis, as well as his nieces, Kelly Kraus Whitman and Marina Finnegan Hassy. Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Marina Maletis Finnegan, and brother, John Peter Maletis.
A funeral will be held on January 8, 2024 at 11:00 am at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Cross in Belmont, 900 Alameda de las Pulgas with a reception to follow.
