Retiring Congresswoman Jackie Speier today endorsed her former aide, Assemblyman Kevin Mullin, to replace her in Congress in a race that has attracted four other candidates.
Speier made the announcement in South San Francisco, Mullin’s hometown.
Mullin, son of former Assemblyman Gene Mullin, previously landed the endorsements of former state Sen. Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, and former Assemblyman Rich Gordon, D-Menlo Park, who were both big supporters of the high-speed rail program despite its unpopularity on the Peninsula. Mullin is also endorsed by state Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, who has introduced several bills to increase housing in urban areas that have been fought by neighborhood activists.
Among the candidates Mullin will face is David Canepa, a member of the county Board of Supervisors and a Daly City resident. Canepa announced today that he has raised $300,000 for his congressional campaign — the most of anyone who has announced their fundraising total.
Others in the race include:
• Burlingame Councilwoman Emily Beach, a Democrat;
• Republican Gus Mattammal, an executive with an educational testing service who lives near Haif Moon Bay, and
• Redwood City attorney Andrew Watters, a Democrat.
State Sen. Josh Becker, D-Menlo Park, was thought early on to be a candidate for the open seat, but so far hasn’t made any announcements that he’s interested in running.
The deadline to enter the race is March 11 and all the candidates will run in a primary on June 7. If no one receives more than 50%, the top two candidates will go on to a November runoff.
Sounds like Mullin has the “insider” connections locked up. Democratic machine politics at work.
Son of another machine politician endorsed by Democrat party insiders and SCOTT WEINER are all red flags. We don’t need another generation of one-party monopoly in California which, as should be painfully obvious to everyone now, has created a real mess. California – 5th largest GDP on the planet – should be a model of good infrastructure, good government, good housing, good land use, and plentiful resources. It should not be a place people want to leave. Newsom and Weiner went to Sacramento leaving a mess in SF – now creating a mess statewide. Maybe it’s time to change, time to say no to Mullins, break the grip of the machine, and vote for people with some substance. I hope the press will not just follow along this time. I hope the electorate finally demands better representation otherwise it’s just a few people in a one-party dictatorship.
I hope the Republican in the race gets some coverage because what Spiere and Biden are doing isn’t working — inflation, $5 gas, afghanistan. We need somebody different than what we’ve got now.
