New faces join Palo Alto council, school board races

As the clock ticks down for candidates to appear on the November ballot, new candidates have tossed their hats in the ring in two Palo Alto races. 

For the Palo Alto City Council, Gary Gechlik has filed to run. 

Gechlik is a doctor at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, who says his campaign platform is “Be good to other people.”  

“It is the simple idea that municipal service is intended to be helpful and non controversial,” Gechlick said in an email to the Post yesterday (Aug. 7). Gechlik hasn’t finished his paperwork to run, but intends to turn it in on Friday. 

He will join a race with incumbents Ed Lauing and Vicki Veenker, Planning and Transportation Commissioner Bryna Chang and Parks and Recreation Commissioner Yudy Deng. 

Meanwhile, in the race for Palo Alto School board, where neither incumbent is running again, theh latest candidate is Howie Xu, who is on the district’s parcel tax oversight committee. He joins Linda Henigin, Avery Wang and John Craig in the race for two seats on the board.
