A Redwood City man has been arrested for allegedly killing a man with his pickup truck, after the latter chased him down for hitting the car he was in, police said today (July 16).
Lazaro Gregorio Chacajlux, 32, was arrested and booked into jail yesterday on suspicion of a felony hit-and-run resulting in death and gross vehicular manslaughter, according to police.
Officers responded to a call of a car crash involving a pedestrian at 7:41 p.m. on Tuesday at the intersection of Woodside Road and Hudson Street, police said.
Officers arrived and found fire and medical personnel providing aid to a 36-year-old adult male, according to police. Despite lifesaving efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene, police say. The man’s name has not been publicly released by the coroner’s office yet, pending notification of his next of kin.
The man had been a passenger in a Jeep traveling southbound on Hudson Street when it was sideswiped by a white Ford pickup truck exiting the driveway behind the Shell gas station near Hudson Street and Woodside Road, according to police.
After the collision, the driver of the Jeep pulled over to exchange information. However, the Chacajlux, the driver of the Ford, fled the scene without stopping, police said.
The man pursued the pickup on foot and caught up to Chacajlux as he slowed in traffic on Woodside Road, police say. The man grabbed onto the truck in an attempt to stop.
Chacajlux accelerated with the man still holding onto the vehicle, according to police. Police say the man subsequently fell from the truck and was run over by the Ford.
A police drone located Chacajlux’s abandoned Ford pickup a short distance from the scene, and the vehicle was seized as evidence, according to police.
The investigation remains ongoing. Chacajlux is in jail in lieu of $100,000 and is expected to appear in court tomorrow.
The police are asking anyone with additional information to contact the department at (650) 780-7100.
