Concerts will feature the works of African American composers

The concert will feature the works of several African American composers including, from left, Harry Burleigh, Betty Jackson King, William Grant Still and Zenobia Powell Perry.

Tickets are on sale for concerts featuring the works of African American composers to benefit Eastside College Preparatory School in East Palo Alto.

The theme for the concerts is “Hold Out for Joy: Music of Hope and Resilience by African American Composers.”

Composers featured in these concerts include William Grant Still, Harry Burleigh, Margaret Bonds, Betty Jackson King, Zenobia Powell Perry, Regina Baiocchi, Joshua McGhee, Valerie Capers, and Earth, Wind & Fire. 

The concerts are Saturday, Jan. 31, and Sunday, Feb. 1, at 3 p.m. each day at the Performing Arts Center of Eastside College Preparatory School, 1041 Myrtle St., East Palo Alto. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for students. Buy advance tickets at https://a.purplepass.com/AACI.

• Carol Somersille, bass clarinet;

• John Worley, trumpet;

• Oscar Pangilinan, alto saxophone;

• Tod Dickow, tenor saxophone;

• Jim Kassis, percussion;

• Charlie Channel, bass;

and The Eastside Choir, Jansen Verplank, director.
