5 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 31 — Fire crews overnight mopped up a fire near Canada College that started Saturday afternoon when a car caught on fire on Interstate 280 near the Farm Hill Boulevard exit.
The fire burned about 10 acres and forced the evacuation of 10 homes. But by 7 p.m., CalFIRE declared it had stopped forward progress of the blaze.
Interstate 280, which was closed Saturday afternoon due to the fire and smoke, reopened later last night.
8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 30 — A car fire on Interstate 280 near Canada College ignited a 10-acre vegetation on both sides of the freeway this afternoon (Aug. 30), according to CalFire’s CZU San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit.
CalFire reported at about 7 p.m. it has stopped forward progress of the blaze and more evacuations are not expected.
Ten residences were evacuated as a precaution, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said.
San Mateo County Fire reports that the fire is being fought by least 15 engines, two water tenders, multiple fixed wing, one helicopter, and a firefighter hand crew and a dozer.
No injuries were reported. No time estimate has been given for reopening the freeway.
