San Mateo County Sheriff’s deputies yesterday (Jan. 5) arrested a man for an alleged attempted burglary at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory after they found him hiding in bushes near the lab, a spokeswoman said.
Deputies responded to a call around 8:30 p.m. yesterday to 2575 Sand Hill Road with a report of a suspicious person with bolt cutters, according to sheriff’s spokeswoman Gretchen Spiker. The sheriff’s office responded to the call at SLAC because though Stanford owns the lab, it is in unincorporated Menlo Park. The Department of Energy runs the lab.
Deputies spotted Ronald Simpson, 46, of Castro Valley, who ran toward Interstate 280 upon spotting the police, Spiker said.
Deputies began to search the 426-acre property with police dogs found Simpson hiding in thick shrubs. During the search, police found a part of the fence was damaged and multiple burglary tools, Spiker said.
Simpson was arrested for attempted burglary, vandalism and two outstanding warrants related to stolen vehicles, Spiker said.
Simpson will be in court tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. and in jail in lieu of $25,000.
I think you have it backwards. The Department of Energy owns the lab but Stanford operates it on behalf of the government.
