One of the defendants in a car race that killed the parents of twin 7-year-old daughters has pleaded no contest and could face up to nine years and four months in prison, according to a prosecutor.

Kyle Harrison, 25, of Redwood City, went racing on Nov. 14, 2022 with Cesar Morales, 19, who was not known to Harrison. Morales’ car hit the vehicle of parents Grace Spiridon and Gregory Ammen, according to District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

The defendants were in San Carlos on El Camino Real at Howard Avenue when the accident happened.

By taking the plea deal, the murder charges were dropped, which Wagstaffe said is because Harrison was not the one whose car killed the parents.

Wagstaffe said that since Harrison was arrested, he has consistently shown genuine remorse and that the victim’s families signed off on the plea deal.

“He’s not the killer, but it couldn’t have happened without him,” Wagstaffe said. “It takes two to have a speed contest. So he’s properly guilty of these charges.”

Harrison will be in San Mateo County Superior Court today for sentencing according to Wagstaffe. The deal calls for him to plead no contest to five felonies, two counts of vehiclular manslaughter, three counts of engaging in a speed contest that resulted in injury and one misdemeanor from speeding.

Morales and Harrison were at a stoplight and agreed to race. The two drove at speeds of 80-90 mph and Morales T-boned another car turning onto El Camino, according to the DA’s office. The car that was hit launched into the air and off of the road killing the parents but leaving their 7-year-old twins alive.
