Palo Alto police say they have arrested two people who are accused of breaking into a home’s garage on Newell Road and driving off with two vehicles.
The theft happened at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning and by noon, police had arrested the two at a San Jose hotel. A third suspect remains at large.
Police booked Richard Angel Flores, 18, of Santa Clara, into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for residential burglary and vehicle theft (both felonies). Police arrested the other suspect for residential burglary and vehicle theft, but since he’s 16, his name isn’t being released.
At about 10 a.m. Tuesday, police dispatchers got a call from a resident of the 1900 block of Newell Road, who reported that his BMW SUV was missing from his garage as well as a blue Volkswagen that had been parked in the driveway.
Police checked surveillance video and learned that at about 7 that morning, three people arrived in a silver Chevrolet Camero and parked in front of the victim’s home. Two of them got out and opened an unlocked blue Volkswagen SUV that was parked in the driveway. They found a garage-door opener, which allowed them to get into the garage.
Once inside the garage, they found the keys to the vehicles and drove away the BMW SUV and the Volkswagen. In the process of pulling the BMW out of the garage, they hit the Volkswagen, causing minor damage.
At about noon, detectives located the two stolen vehicles in the parking lot of a hotel in the 2100 block of Gold Street in San Jose. Police then arrested two suspects, though a third suspect got away.
Seriously? Leaving an UNLOCKED car on public street ???
The car was in the driveway, not a public street. Don’t blame the victim.
To criminals and thugs any unfenced driveway appears a public street
The victim left a garage door opener in an unlocked car, and left the keys to two cars in a place that was easily discovered. The owner/victim deserves at least some of the blame, if not most of the blame.
We don’t believe in prison. catch and release
