A bat found in the Hoover Park dog run tested positive for rabies Friday (June 29), according to Palo Alto Animal Services.

“We are not aware of any direct contact that this particular bat had with any humans or canines,” Animal Services said in a statement.

Officials say to never touch a bat or let kids or animals near one on the ground.

Sometimes, hot weather can cause them to fall from trees. Bats that look sick should be reported to Palo Alto Animal Control at (650) 329-2413.

If it’s safe to do so, cover the bat with a box to prevent rabies exposure.
