A 73-year-old bicyclist died after he was struck by a car in Palo Alto, and police said they believe the cyclist ran a stop sign, leading to the collision.

Eugene Conroy, of East Palo Alto, was riding his bike on Greenwood Avenue about a half-mile from the Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo, when he collided with a car at the intersection of Hutchinson Avenue at about 9:40 a.m. Monday, according to police Lt. Zach Perron.

When officers arrived, they found Conroy unconscious with major injuries. He was taken to the hospital, where he died the following day, Perron said.

Although the incident occurred Monday, police didn’t release any information until yesterday.

The driver of a 1993 Nissan Altima, who is a Palo Alto resident in his 70s, was not injured and stayed at the scene of the collision, Perron said. He cooperated with police and there is no indication that either drugs or alcohol were a factor, he said.

Police believe that Conroy did not stop for the stop sign at Greenwood and Hutchinson avenues, and the driver, who didn’t have a stop sign, struck the bicyclist in the intersection, Perron said.
