City Manager Ed Shikada has recommended that Acting Police Chief Andrew Binder, a 25-year veteran of law enforcement including seven years in Palo Alto, become the next police chief, succeeding Robert Jonson, who is running for sheriff. The recommendation goes to City Council on Aug. 8 for approval.

Since joining the Palo Alto police force, Binder has gone from lieutenant to captain and has two years of experience as assistant chief.

Shikada said Binder was selected following a nationwide search.

Binder is a Bay Area native and holds a criminal justice administration degree from San Jose State University and a master’s degree in criminal justice from Arizona State University and has completed the FBI National Academy for Law Enforcement Managers as well as the POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) Executive Development Course.
