A former Palo Alto school teacher was sentenced Friday to six years and eight months in prison for performing sex acts on an underage female family member and uploading the videos to PornHub, a prosecutor said.
Judge Jeffrey Finigan said that Dawn Giannini’s case was one of the worst he’s seen, pointing to the great impact it’s had on her family, according to Chief Deputy District Attorney Al Serrato.
Finigan said during Friday’s sentencing that he did not accept Giannini’s claim that she didn’t understand that what she was doing was wrong, given how far from normal it is, Serrato said.
Giannini said she was sorry for what she did and that she understood she tore her family apart.
Giannini, 50, of Redwood City, was charged with 19 felonies related to the sex acts with the teen, but Friday pleaded no contest, a guilty plea in the eyes of the law, to four of those charges on Oct. 30.
The case came to light last year when a classmate of the victim saw the videos on PornHub and reported them to the Redwood City High School principal.
Giannini is accused of having a sexual relationship with the relative when she was 16 to 17 from 2016 to 2018 in Redwood City and Santa Cruz County.
Giannini was a fourth-grade teacher at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School in Palo Alto beginning in 2015.
Starting in 2007, she was a special education assistant and substitute for the Redwood City School District.
It is not believed that Giannini acted inappropriately with any of her students.
