The Village Cheese House in Palo Alto’s Town & Country Village Shopping Center has closed and the landlord is looking for a new operator to run the business.

The Village Cheese House has been selling custom deli sandwiches in the shopping center at Embarcadero Road and El Camino Real since 1959, when T&C opened.

“While Village Cheese House Palo Alto is closing its doors for now, the center hopes to reopen with new ownership and continue Village Cheese House’s heritage at Town & Country Village,” said a statement from Ellis Partners, owner of T&C.

Jim Ellis said in the statement that his company is looking for a new owner for the Village Cheese House.

“Ellis Partners enjoys being able to support and partner with small businesses in the Bay Area, such as Village Cheese House,” Ellis said. “They’ve been with us for many years and we’re grateful for the current owner’s longstanding commitment to Town & Country Village. We hope to bring new ownership to Village Cheese House Palo Alto and continue bringing the beloved proprietary recipes and menu items to the Palo Alto community.”

Attempts to reach the most recent operators of the Cheese House, Bernard and Joni Pailma, were unsuccessful.

The couple had opened a second Village Cheese House at 111 W. St. John St. in January, but that location appears to have closed as well.

  1. Wished they would have dropped a hint they were in trouble and maybe the community would have come to their rescue. I think they would have made it.
