Laurance (Laurie) Hoagland, Jr., was born in Omaha, Nebraska. He earned an AB degree in Economics at Stanford, an MA degree as a Marhall Scholar at Oxford and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He served nine years as President and CEO of Stanford Management Company and twelve years as CIO of the Hewlett Foundation. His investment career spanned 35 years and six institutions, during which his long-term focus and intellectual rigor earned him the sobriquet of “the other Sage of Omaha.” His long career built a legacy of superior returns, robust investment organizations and the mentoring of a new generation of endowment managers.

Laurie served as Board Chair of the Commonfund; as board member of the Berkeley Endowment Management Company, the Lucile Packard Foundation, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the Louisville Presbyterian Seminary; as Chair, member or advisor to the investment committees of the Rockefeller Foundation, the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, and the California Institute of Technology.

Laurie is predeceased by his parents, Laurance and Naomi Hoagland, Sr., his sister, Jayne, and his brother, Peter. He is survived by his wife, Grace, four sons, Lee, Craig, David and Ted, four daughters-in-law, Gina, Jessie, Suzanne and Michelle Zimney and ten grandchildren.
