A man who lives in the unincorporated San Mateo County community of North Fair Oaks has been sentenced to six months in jail for firing a gun through a door at his mother, a prosecutor said.

Juan Francisco Garcia, 48, pleaded no contest to discharge of a firearm and illegally having a gun on Sept. 26, said Assistant District Attorney James Wade.

Garcia was arrested on May 12, 2018 after he had an argument with his mother and threatened to kill himself, according to the DA’s office.

Garcia then fired two shots through a bedroom door after his mother barricaded herself for safety. Garcia’s sister arrived and sheriff’s deputies said he pointed a gun at her and threatened to kill her.

Two children were in the house when the shooting happened, according to Wade.

Garcia eventually put down the gun and no one was hurt.

Under the sentence handed down Friday (Nov. 22), Garcia has been ordered to not harass his mother or sister, said Wade. He must surrender to the jail to serve his time by Jan. 18.
